World Sickle Cell Day is observed annually on June 19th in Ghana and globally to raise awareness about sickle cell disease, a genetic disorder that affects hemoglobin production and causes red blood cells to take on a sickle shape. This condition can lead to blockages in blood circulation, resulting in pain and potential organ damage.

– *Advocacy*: Pushing for greater participation of patient support organizations in policy development to improve healthcare access for sickle cell patients.

– *Support for Patients*: Encouraging patients to seek regular medical care, adhere to treatment plans, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

*Key Challenges*:

– *Limited Access to Healthcare*: Sickle cell patients in Ghana face challenges in accessing comprehensive healthcare, including essential medications like Hydroxyurea.

– *Stigma and Misconceptions*: There are still misconceptions about the disease, with some believing it’s spiritual, leading to stigmatization.

– *Inadequate Facilities*: Specialized sickle cell clinics are limited, and existing ones often lack necessary logistics and technology

PUBLIC HEARING

Every four years, MMDAs are mandated to prepare an all encompassing Medium Term Development Plan in line with the National Medium Term Development Framework, National Development Agendas and Global goals. As part of the preparation processes for the 2026-2029 plan period, every MMDA is required to organize a public hearing with all stakeholders to validate needs assessment inputs in the Draft plan prior to its submission. It is in that light that the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly organized a public hearing involving Assembly members, Traditional leaders, Unit Committee members, Reps from Residents association, GPRTU, PWDs, Business groups, Religious bodies, Farmers’ association, Women groups and market reps to ascertain the accuracy and inclusivity of information captured within the plan, make the necessary corrections where need be and accept it as a working document for the Municipality. The hearing was well attended by all relevant stakeholders and was successful.

HEPATITIS B DAY

The theme for World Hepatitis Day in Ghana, observed on July 28, is “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down”. This theme emphasizes the urgent need to simplify, scale up, and integrate hepatitis services into national health systems, tackling systemic, societal, financial, and informational barriers that hinder hepatitis elimination and liver cancer prevention.

In Ghana, approximately 3 million people live with Hepatitis B, and 900,000 with Hepatitis C, with high prevalence and low awareness levels contributing to chronic liver diseases being among the top causes of death. To address this, Mega Lifesciences Ghana Limited has partnered with the Ghana Association for the Study of Liver and Digestive Diseases (GASLIDD) to screen 17,500 to 19,000 Ghanaians for Hepatitis B and C free of charge, promoting awareness, vaccination, and treatment access . Ablekuma west municipal health directorate held a mini durbar for screening and free vaccination at the day at Apostolic church behind St. Martin Hospital, shaibu. In attendance was the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West Hon. Kweku Addo who fully sponsored the program. The Presiding Member and some of the Assembly members in Ablekuma west were also in attendance
