The Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly was carved out of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and officially established in 2018 with its capital located at Dansoman. Like all other District Assemblies, the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly was established under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), with Legislative Instrument 2309, as part of government’s efforts to deepen decentralization and promote grassroots development by restructuring larger metropolitan assemblies into more manageable units.
Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly covers an area of approximately 9.26 square kilometers. The Municipality is strategically located in the southwestern part of the Greater Accra Region. It shares boundaries with the Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly to the north, Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly to the east, and is bordered to the south by the Gulf of Guinea, making it one of the few urban municipalities with coastal access.
The Office of the Municipal Chief Executive is the highest administrative and political authority in the municipality. This office is supported by the Executive Committee, which acts as the Assembly’s executive and coordinating body. The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who is appointed by the President of the Republic, chairs the Executive Committee and oversees the implementation of Assembly decisions, policies, and development initiatives.
Dansoman, the capital of the municipality, is one of the largest estates in West Africa and a vibrant urban community within the Greater Accra Region. It is known for its rich culture, dynamic youth population, and its strong contributions to Ghana’s music and creative arts industry.
Scenic Spots: Ablekuma West is home to several vibrant community parks and recreational spaces. One notable area is the Dansoman Keep Fit Club Park, which is popular for community events, fitness activities, and weekend gatherings. The area’s blend of urban life with patches of green and open spaces makes it ideal for both residents and visitors looking to enjoy a relaxing atmosphere within the city.
Beaches: The Municipality has access to the Atlantic coastline, with stretches of beach along areas such as Dansoman Beach and Shiabu. These beaches, though lesser known, offer serene views, sea breeze, and opportunities for community leisure and cultural festivals.
Hotels: While Dansoman is more residential in nature, it still hosts several cozy guesthouses, lodges, and budget hotels that cater to both short-term visitors and business travelers. Many accommodations offer easy access to central Accra and surrounding municipal areas, making it a convenient location for tourists and workers alike.
In conclusion, Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly is a growing urban district with a unique mix of coastal charm, vibrant community life, and developmental potential. It continues to be a key part of the Greater Accra Region’s transformation agenda, striving to improve living standards and promote inclusive development for all residents.
