The Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly was carved out of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and officially established in 2018 with its capital located at Dansoman. Like all other District Assemblies, the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly was established under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), with Legislative Instrument 2309, as part of government’s efforts to deepen decentralization and promote grassroots development by restructuring larger metropolitan assemblies into more manageable units.

Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly covers an area of approximately 9.26 square kilometers. The Municipality is strategically located in the southwestern part of the Greater Accra Region. It shares boundaries with the Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly to the north, Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly to the east, and is bordered to the south by the Gulf of Guinea, making it one of the few urban municipalities with coastal access.

The Office of the Municipal Chief Executive is the highest administrative and political authority in the municipality. This office is supported by the Executive Committee, which acts as the Assembly’s executive and coordinating body.
