Ablekuma West MP and MCE Visit Ramsar Sites to Assess Environmental Conservation Efforts

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Hon. Kweku Addo, together with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. George Kpakpo Allotey, has paid a working visit to the Ramsar sites located within the municipality. The visit was part of ongoing efforts to evaluate the state of the municipality’s ecological assets and reinforce the commitment to environmental conservation.

During the tour, the two officials inspected various sections of the wetlands, which are internationally recognized for their ecological significance. The Ramsar sites in Ablekuma West serve as vital habitats for biodiversity and play a crucial role in flood control, climate regulation, and sustaining local livelihoods.

Hon. Kweku Addo expressed concern about the environmental pressures facing the wetlands, including encroachment, pollution, and illegal development. He emphasized the need for stronger community engagement and enforcement of environmental protection laws.

“Our wetlands are not just natural resources — they are national treasures. It is our collective responsibility to preserve them for future generations,” the MP stated.Hon. George Kpakpo Allotey echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts between government agencies, traditional authorities, and residents to ensure sustainable management of the Ramsar sites.

The visit concluded with a pledge from both leaders to advocate for increased funding, public education, and stricter monitoring to safeguard the wetlands. They also hinted at plans to develop eco-tourism initiatives that would provide economic opportunities while promoting conservation.
