LOCAL GOVERNMENT MINISTER VISITS ABLEKUMA WEST
On Monday the 12th of June, 2023, the Honourable Minister of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development together with his entourage paid a working visit to the Assembly to assess the implementation status of the GARID Operations and Maintenance plan. Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) is an ongoing project funded by the World Bank under the auspices of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources. The project seeks to address flooding and solid waste management issues within the Odaw basin, of which the Assembly is a beneficiary.
During the Minister’s visit, the planning officer presented the progress of work on behalf of the Assembly. The presentation covered activities carried out such as desilting of tertiary drains, dredging of the Pambros and Camara storm drains, house to house sensitization exercise, education at lorry stations, churches and mosques. The Minister inquired about the disbursement of the GARID funds from the Municipal Chief Executive. He was impressed with the level of implementation and hoped that the field visit afterward would tally with the presentation.
The team then headed out to inspect some drains that were desilted. First was the drain behind the GCB Bank at Sahara, Sabolai St. The team led by the Hon. MCE and key officers assessed the impact of work done. The Hon. MCE responded to some questions posed by the Minister and the media houses present and called on his officers for some clarification where need be.
Next was the Pambros salt pond area where some major dredging exercises were carried out. The assessment process was repeated. In his closing remarks, the Hon. Minister charged the Assembly under the watch of the Hon. MCE to put a stop to structures springing up in the Ramseyer site and other water ways. The Minister then thanked the Hon. MCE and the Assembly for the warm reception.
