The Agric department of the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly recently performed a demonstration on catfish raring in a tarpaulin set up on their premises. The demonstration which was setup on August 22, 2022 was aimed at showcasing the potential profitability of catfish production as compared to Tilapia production.

Catfish is becoming increasingly popular worldwide due to its health benefits and taste. One reason catfish production is gaining momentum is because it is generally more robust and grows faster than other fish species. Additionally, the demand for catfish is increasing at an unprecedented rate considering its high nutritional value.

The demonstration took a period of seven months to mature and was treated as a production project, allowing the assembly to test the viability of catfish production as a business model. The department found that the catfish yield met their expectations, and this was a great indication that catfish production is indeed a profitable venture and can be a sustainable business opportunity for farmers.

Following the success of the initiative, the mature catfish was distributed to the staff of the assembly who were interested in purchasing the fish. This initiative was a boost to the workers who were able to take home fresh fish, promoting healthy eating habits, and encouraging family fish farming.

Moreover, using tarpaulin for fish raring is increasingly becoming popular due to its numerous advantages. Tarpaulin, a durable and flexible material, can be used to create a fish pond with varying specifications, making it adaptable to different climates or environments. Tarpaulin ponds have a higher carrying capacity than standard ponds, hence, they can produce a higher quantity of fish which ultimately translates to more income being generated.

Ultimately, the demonstration showed that catfish farming in tarpaulin ponds is not only a viable option but is also an opportunity to increase productivity while promoting sustainable development. The demonstration also showed that catfish farming can be a source of income generation and employment for the community. With continued support and investment in the catfish farming industry, catfish production in tarpaulin ponds is a profitable venture that could transform the agricultural industry while promoting food security and healthy eating habits.
